It turns out we were right! All those handfuls of nuts we have chomping on have been not only a healthy snack, but they also have been good for our ticker!
We can thank Swedens finest scientific minds for researching the health benefits of eating unsalted nuts. A study monitored the cardiovascular health of 61,000 Swedish people aged 45 to 83 years old for 17 years.
Eating nuts one to three times a month was associated with a 3% lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation, while those who consumed nuts three or more times a week had an 18% reduced risk, the research found.
Strokes are one of the most prominent killers in Australia and a leading cause of disability. It may be surprising to hear, but strokes are killing more Aussie blokes and babes than prostate and breast cancer every year. They predicted in 2017 there will be almost 56,000 new and recurrent strokes; that is one stroke every nine minutes. However, the good news is that more than 80% of strokes can be prevented!
